March 6th, 2025 9:15pm - Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawaii

 When: March 6th, 2025 9:15pm (5:15pm in Hawaii)

Where: Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawaii

Who: Kim Jones

Hi guys, welcome back to another reading! Today we are going to be talking about KANEOHE, O’AHU, HAWAII, USA. I know the name is kind of long, but there are many interesting facts that we are going to learn in today’s reading. Tonight we have learned that… People don't realize that there's a Hawaiian language. Some kids go to school in Hawaii and learn the language all day long, so they know how to communicate with people in their day to day life. They have to make sure that they are connected with land because a lot of their cultural events connect with the land. One of the challenges they have to experience is that it's very expensive to live there, like bread and peanut butter are highly expensive. They celebrate thanksgiving differently. They cook imu. They dig a pit and cook it in an oven. That's how they celebrate their Thanksgiving. May is better, because it has better climate weather. September can be the hottest month they have to experience. Their most common word is “aloha,” which means hello. A good common food in Hawaii is to eat tuna by cutting it into small pieces, then marinating it. They like to eat a hamburger patty and cover it with egg. They love to eat shaved ice and put vanilla on the bottom. Beaches are definitely a good place to visit in Hawaii, especially for your first time. The most commonly visited mountain in Hawaii is Ko’olau. It has beautiful standouts on the mountain. You get paid $50,000 as a teacher for your first salary. There are actually black crabs that have been spotted on the beach. The prettiest native flower she likes is a flower called Ilima, a tiny yellow flower. The flower is used to make lei. It's made using between 500-1,000 small Ilima flowers. The climate in Hawaii is consistently a warm, tropical climate, with mild temperatures year- around . You're not allowed to touch sea turtles. It's illegal to approach dolphins. It's also illegal to dig up native plants. It's also very illegal to touch sea lions. They randomly feel earthquakes. The last tropical storm that caused some damage was about 9 years ago. They grow bananas that are call apple bananas and ice cream bananas. In Hawaii, the red worm cucumber refers to a conspicuous sea cucumber, known as the Opheodesoma Spectabilis, a worm like sea creature that is found in the Kaneohe Bay, and Pearl Harbor. They often can be sprawled on sand or seaweed in shallow water. They have some of the original food markets, like Chick-fil-A, that was recently built, Mcdonalds, and Burger King (sadly not Chipotle). Surprisingly, there is a Dairy Queen in Hawaii located in Honolulu.

March 6th, 2025 8:30pm - Ukraine

When: March 6th, 2025 8:30pm

Where: Ukraine via Texas (Refugee)

Who: Natasha Griboyedova

Hey guys, welcome back to the blog today! We'll be talking about what we’ve learned about Ukraine. In Ukraine they have food similar to dumplings but with different fillings,Crepes, and a lot of foods with flour. We have learned that they prepare food for lots of celebrations like birthdays, weddings, and many other celebrations. In Ukraine they wear lots of costumes, necklaces, headwear, etc. These costumes are worn to represent their food, culture and traditions.

We also learned about the type of instruments. The first one is called a Bandura which is a Ukrainian instrument and there is an older smaller version called the Kobza but its a plucked instrument with multiple strings. Another thing we learned is the mannerisms in Ukraine. For example, if you were close and personal while talking to someone in Ukraine, it would be polite and mannerly but here in the U.S, it would be weird and awkward.

We have learned that Ukraine and Russia get compared and mixed up alot but there are many differences. There are many different holidays, traditions, celebrations and so much more. Ukraine and Russia also have very different cultures/religions. Ukraine's main religion is Eastern Orthodox Christians and Russia’s main religion is Russian Orthodox Christians. Ukraine and Russia also have different cultures. Ukraine’s culture is influenced by Slavic Mythology and Ukrainian is Greek Catholicism. Russian culture is influenced by byzantine, and slavic.

Jobs are mainly the same in Ukraine; there are doctors, police, nurses, firefighters, etc.

They have similar games like Tug of War and Basketball but they also have different games/sports.In Ukraine they have games/sports called Bandy which is Shooting Cricket.

March 6th, 2025 7:30pm - Meteorology via Fayetteville, Arkansas

When: March 6th, 2025 7:30pm

Where: Fayetteville, Arkansas - Meteorology

Who: Skot Covert

There are different types of Meteorologists. This Meteorologist works on weather. He warns us if there is bad weather or tells us if we are going to have good weather.  Meteorologist’s work hours depend on what the weather is like, if the weather is bad they would have to stay late or if the weather is fine they would have less work. The weather can be unpredictable and sometimes the computers could stop working because there's a limit on what they could do. The weather could knock out the computers and they would have to have backups like manual work. Some tools that they use to predict the weather are satellites and computer models. They use Doppler Radars for more severe weather like tornados and some people go try and actually just get a look at the tornado or other kinds of severe weather.

Even if there is bad weather, like a tornado, heading towards the weather station they would still try and work until they absolutely can’t anymore and then they go into a safe place. A Category 5 Tornado came in and they got to go fly towards it and see it up close. They have to try and tell the weather where people can understand it because some people could interpret it differently than others based on where they live or what language they speak. Climates can change a lot during a long period of time because if it is usually hot in an area it could be known for being a little hotter or colder in the future. Jobs for Meteorologists make different amounts of money based on where they live, like in New York, New Jersey, or Texas. He has encountered a few EF3 Tornadoes and only a small amount of EF5 Tornadoes. Tornadoes can be very dangerous and can cause many deaths and property damage. One time they spotted and looked at a tornado that was about as wide as the Golden Gate Bridge.

The number one misconception is people think that Meteorologists study Meteors. Did you knoa a tornado watch means it could happen while a warning means it is actively happening at that exact moment? Journalism is a fancy name for lots of professions that documate history. He mostly covers Oklahoma and Arkansas but also talks about big things related to weather, most notably hurricanes.

If you have interest in meteorology then you should obviously focus on the weather but also Math and Science are very important. Even if you're bad at Math it's still very much possible to become a Meteorologist.

March 6th, 2025 7:00pm - Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma

When: March 6th, 2025 7:00pm

Where: Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma

Who: Robert Lewis

In today's virtual call, we have learned some interesting facts about the Cherokee Nation.

He is an artist and storyteller. He talked about stories he has told lots of people. The most famous story he tells is about a rabbit that goes to the woods and sees lots of animals running around and asks why they are running. He also explains that the rabbits cause lots of mischief but rabbits can also bring gifts and careers for the Cherokee.

Some traditions they do is that men will sing and do different beats while the women dance to the songs. They will go in a clockwise direction while lining up in age groups in number order, and they do it on stages. Children will have their dances, then teens, and adults. They dance at night, which is a tradition they call Nighthawks. He talked about how he likes to use watercolor to paint pictures since he deeply enjoys drawing.

He described how they live in small houses, and they collect small treasures. They would also tell small stories. He talks about how they would give girls sticks if they were attracted to them. He also explains how there are more Cherokee groups in more different states. They also would make bow and arrows and crafts to use in their storytimes.

It is very traditional in Cherokee culture to be respectful to other people and to be respectful of the land. He went to college to study art. Cherokee kids attend public school. A traditional food from Cherokee is Hickory Nut Soup, people eat it during Christmas as a reminder of their heritage.

March 6th, 2025 3:45pm - Greece/Israel/Egypt

When: March 6th, 2025 3:45pm

Where: Greece/Israel/Egypt - via Arkansas

Who: Clay Beason

Next up we are learning about Greece, Israel, and Egypt.

Some interesting facts about Greece is that the students in Greece will start learning about the culture, the food, and the different languages. When you live in Greece you start learning about the different Greek gods. In Greece they have this thing called a Gyro, which is like pita bread with different types of meat on it. They even put french fries on it and some kind of greek yogurt. Most people in Greece speak English mostly.

A historical landmark in Greece is The Parthenon from ancient Greece which sits on a hill called the Acropolis. Back in the old ages the athens believed that they didn't need democracy so the people fought in battle so they wouldn't have a democracy. As when they were trying to name the city of Athens, normally they would fight to see who would name Athens but instead they did a competition and so they named Athens after Athena.

An interesting fact about the Greek is they will feed you a lot of food and welcome you into their home. The most well known mountain in Greece is known for Greek gods living there. Greece is very diverse. Most people think of beaches when they think of Greece but it is actually made up of 80% mountains. There is a president in Greece and a prime minister. The prime minister is more like the president, and the president is more like the vice president. When you go to the hospital in Greece you do not have to pay for your treatment. There are over 250 days of sun. In the summer, it is hot but not humid so you will not sweat as much. A lot of seafood is being consumed. There are bears in Greece but you rarely see them.

When he was traveling for classes he said he was supposed to go to Egypt around 12 times but instead went only once. The reason for this is because of the many possibilities of terrorist attacks that Egypt was being threatened with. When he went to visit he was near the pyramids which were made as monuments to house the tombs of Pharaohs.

When you meet a person in Israel their name means something. The biggest city in Israel is Jerusalem. Israel is known as a very small country. So if you were to put Israel into Arkansas, you would be able to fit about 6 Israels into Arkansas. Jerusalem is known for where God had been. The temples in Jerusalem are very special to the people that live there because Jesus used to go to the temples and pray there to God.

March 6th, 2025 3:00pm - Sydney, Australia - Sydney Zoo

 When: March 6th, 2025 3:00pm (March 7th 8:00am in Australia)

Where: Sydney, Australia

Who: Sydney Zoo - https://sydneyzoo.com/

Now in the Sydney Zoo, we get several opportunities to see many different animals. The zoo has 830 different species and about 4,000 animals! The first animal we get to see is a female lizard. She eats Snails, Spiders, and Insects. She also has a blue tongue to protect her from predators. As of right now, it is 6:06 am in Sydney! The next animal we get to see is a child Python Snake named Fettucini! It likes to hang from roofs, catch bats, and climb trees. Seeing all these creatures is so cool and exciting! Along with all of these animals, we get to see a very unique insect called a Spiny Leaf Insect. This insect pretends to be a leaf for protection, while technically being an insect! We wanted to know if they had any Sugar Gliders, which they do, but unfortunately did not get to see one. As we go along, we get to see many Kangaroos lying and going about. The biggest Kangaroo they have is called a Big Red. The Kangaroo’s were eating some grass. They are strong, intelligent, and adorable! The red Kangaroos eat enriched food for improved health. While taking a look at the Kangaroos, we also got to see an Ostrich walking around. They also have an African Rhino and many other species. In the zoo, they have a sign with the medicinal uses of plants. Australia’s weather is very hot and humid. Have you ever wondered what zoos do when fights break out between animals? The zookeepers bang objects when fights break out. Moving along, one of the animals we were most excited to see are the Koalas! They sleep 20 hours a day! I wish I could do that. They eat only about the top or the tips of the leaves of trees. The Crocodiles in the Sydney Zoo prefer to be in water rather than land. Its head is half the length of the zoo keeper's body length! Thank you for everything we got to see. We enjoyed seeing all the animals and creatures. It was all very fascinating!

March 6th, 2025 1:00pm - West Bay, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands - Sea Turtle Rescue & Conservation

When: March 6th, 2025 1:00pm (2:00pm in Cayman Islands)

Where: West Bay, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Who: Sea Turtle Rescue & Conservation - https://www.turtle.ky/

Next we learned about the Cayman islands.

The Cayman is the largest and most polluted of the three islands.Their sea turtle expedition started in 1968 and not too long after there turtle farm in the 1980s to the 2000s. Around the waters of the Cayman islands are home to 4 species.

Some things about the sea turtles are that the men normally have long tails, while the women have a shorter tail. The females can lay over a 100 golf ball sized eggs. When the conservationists find the eggs they sort through them carefully to do research on when they will hatch. When baby turtles hatch after being in there for about 2 months, they have a very soft shell that is a green color.

They find the turtles in tropical oceans. These men would go into catboats and find turtles. They breed turtles to help their species grow. They also help parrots and breed them. They have many other animals that they help, they don't just help turtles. Some animals include: parrots, pigeons, and some other animals. They collect the eggs so that they will be safe. They sort them into different hatching baskets. The eggs are made into a kind of rubber substance when they hatch. Volunteers will come and watch the eggs and help them. After the eggs are done growing, they go to the beach and start releasing them back into the ocean. They also will take boats sometimes and bring the baby turtles into the ocean to grow to be adults.

We’ve enjoyed our time talking to them and learning about the Cayman Island Sea Turtle Rescue. Here is a recap on some fun facts that we’ve learned! If you ever come across a sea turtle and are wondering if it's a girl or a boy, all you have to do is check out their tail. The males have long tails that extend past their rear, while the females have shorter tails. Another interesting thing about sea turtles, specifically the females, is that they can lay more than 100 eggs at a time, each the size of a golf ball. That’s insane! They hatch after being incubated for about 2 months, and when they do, they’re no bigger than the palm of your hand. Can you imagine holding a newly hatched sea turtle? The last fact that I held onto is about their release. They have to be released at night and in red light to avoid being disoriented.

The time we’ve spent learning about the sea turtles rescue and conservation has been greatly appreciated. We can’t wait to continue our learning.

March 6th, 2025 12:00pm - Israel/Sudan/Cyprus - Archaeology

When: March 6th, 2025 12:00pm

Where: Israel/Sudan/Cyprus - Archaeology

Who: Scott Huff

Hi guys, welcome back to our blog! Today we talked to an archeologist that has lived in 3 different places! That's right he’s lived in Israel, Sudan, and Egypt. We are currently observing some things he's explored. He is showing the dirt, burnt straw, and unburnt straw from an ancient stable. These different layers of dirt show the history of civilization and how people survived back then.

Cyprus was built in the Iron Age. It was found only 2 feet under the ground. The things included marble, statues, and messages that are only half decipherable.

In Sudan he is unable to revisit due to the government collapsing and making it dangerous to travel to and study. There are a series of ancient Egyptian pyramids. Near these pyramids they found ancient Egyptian things to be preserved. The measured and mapped out all of it and the graph is the only record of all of it.

In Israel there is the Formation of Tel which is where everyone built a top of, making giant mounds that are found in Palestine and Israel. In these mounds there are metal making areas, homes, and other places and things they used to live and survive.

There's the “uh-oh house” which got its name from seeming to go on forever to the point where it was becoming problematic because they couldn't keep researching that house and they needed it to stop.

In the late bronze period they would find foot imprints in the stone. Archaeologists will be able to find all sorts of stuff like valuables you carried every day, plates, bones, even what you ate. At least if it's meat. They also found seeds, photos, and ancient artifacts so if your phone lasts long enough that could be examined in the future.

If you are interested in history, biology, photography, computer science, then archeology might be for you to explore as a potential career path. It’s a very captivating job that helps you understand the past of humans. The best part is that there's always something new to discover! Archaeology is an amazing job and it gives you lots of new experiences and many opportunities to learn about the world and its past. Archaeology helps and allows you to view statues, buildings, and so much more in a new way.

In archeology you get to see how people made stuff back in the day, how people behaved back then and help resolve real world problems. For if we had thrown away the Mona Lisa or similar paintings we would never be able to learn what and how art worked back in the day.

Archeology is an art style of discovering history and will impact our future by learning about our past.
