It’s not near water and is a popular city, it is also a business city. It is Johannesburg! BBQ is really popular around South Africa. There are a whole bunch of different people who live there. The most popular sports are cricket, soccer, and rugby. The weather is typically sunny. Most of the jobs are the same as the U.S., but tourism is a big part, too. The people from the south are very welcoming, and the people from the north are usually to themselves. The music is very different. They listen to traditional music , Amapiano. Housing for them is pretty expensive, but not all houses. There are many different tours that you can do. You can bike or go to the mines. They use bills and coins, called Rands. They have a high unemployment rate, which causes lots of crime. They have public schools and private schools just like the U.S. If you have an idea, back yourself and try it!

5:00 AM - MYSTERY CALL - Johannesburg, South Africa

When: March 10th @ 5:00 AM (1:00 PM in South Africa)

Where: MYSTERY CALL - Johannesburg, South Africa

Who: Matt Dalton

Our last mystery call. It is quickly determined that they are in the southern hemisphere. A little trickery came into play as the interviewers asked for the time. From his answer we were able to confirm the time zone he was in. After that it was only a simple matter of asking for the weather. From his answer we were able to tell that they are located in South Africa. After listing off a few cities, Johannesburg was the correct answer.

After figuring out his location, he began to explain his situation. During the entirety of the call, he was in Low Shade. Low shade is where the government attempts to save power and try to use light as much as possible due to their poor electricity generation. He also explains that they are experiencing political strife and some violence.

Then he talks about some of the foods they eat in South Africa. He said most of the people there eat chicken, steak, currys, and pap. One of the places that he said is a good place to visit is The Kruger National Park. He said the park is a great place to go when touring South Africa. Some of the traditional clothing that people wear is bright colored patterned clothes. The city he is in is more modern than other places in South Africa.

In Johannesburg, the weather is pretty warm. Right now, the weather is in the high 80’s. The weather is mostly sunny. In South Africa, they are enjoying summer right now. Some of the animals found in South Africa are bats and owls, but foxes, genets, meerkats, and other animals are found in the suburbs. Gas in Johannesburg is about 22.27 South Africa Rand. The average cost for a house in Johannesburg is about R1.65 million.

2:00AM Cape Town, South Africa

When: March 13th, 2020 @ 2:00am CST
Where: Cape Town, South Africa
Who: Julie - connections with touring company

Julie has been teaching 13 year-olds for 4 years. She prefers to teach her students outside to see the animals. She lives in Cape Town, where they generally speak British. Her 14 year-olds learn 3 languages: English, Afrikaans, and German. There are 11 official languages in South Africa. Cape Town is a very populous city full of people and architecture. They eat low-fat and low-carb carbohydrates, meat (like BBQ), and hybrid dishes, such as Dutch cooking mixed with Indian ingredients. Children can go to safaris and see all the 'big' animals. Cities are somewhat like America, except there is a higher rate of crime, and of course the economy is less compared to America's. The closest ocean to her is 5 minutes away by car. It's the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean is 3 hours away. It's very diverse including races, languages, religion, culture, and people all together. She describes her country as a 'rainbow' country. You need a visa to visit there, and due to the fact that we are under 18, we of course need an adult to accompany us. Some historical places in Cape Town are the Castle of Good Hope, Sa Cultural History Museum, and King's Blockhouse. Meat is a very big thing in Africa, along with salad and vegetables. The scariest thing she has ever seen is a lion killing a zebra and then devouring it! Table Top Mountains are older than the Rockies and were formed due to plate tectonics.
